THE PLAN
8 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT Design, and carve an interlocking linocut print block.
2. SWBAT use traditional printmaking processes to print a variety of patterns to make on- of-a-kind at works that are 2 and3 dimensional.

1. print block (Blick Soft-Kut Blocks work very well)
2. carving tools for carving blocks
3. Ink, rollers and inking plate.
4. paper
5. opaque water based paint.
6. Watercolor paint
7. Cardboard and other substrates for sculpture.

1. create a patterned drawing that will repeat. (each side that has lines going off the image has corresponding lines on the other side)
2. transfer the image to a print block and carve all the space so that the drawn lines and black shapes are the raised portion of the block.
3. The student will be making 5 art projects from this block. The first two art works are about repetition, color and pattern. Students will create two completely different art works by changing the block pattern, print ink and paper.
4. The next two art works will also be completely different from each other by randomly printing the blocks, using them in a collage and adding other elements such as paint, paper overlay, layering techniques and more. The attached photos will show many examples of the possibilities of this step.
5. The last art work is a three dimensional sculpture using a substrate that is completely covered in printed paper. Please see atatched photos

Each of the five art works may be individually graded, with an additional major grade for the unity of the art collection, work habits and technical ability of the student during the unit.

I do this project every other year at my school. the large scale of the patterned art works covers the entire hallway when on display. I am constantly amazed at the variety and quality of the art the students produce during this unit.
