Collaborative Patterned Display

Students create patterned designs on paper pizza slice holders which are then assembled into a display piece.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use lines and shapes to create patterns.
2. SWBAT apply patterning techniques to create designs with unity and variety.
3. SWBAT demonstrate good craftsmanship in the creation of their patterned piece.

1. Paperboard pizza slice holders (similar to these- 500 for $26. https://goo.gl/jpZDz3)
2. Pencils
3. Scratch paper
4. Markers of varying sizes and colors
5. Stapler & staples
6. Hole Punch
7. String

1. Discuss patterns and how definition varies from math to art
2. Students create patterned designs on pizza slice holders and color neatly with markers
-can brainstorm on paper first
3. Finished wedges are stapled together, side to side, with 12 forming a rough circle.
4. Display
-You can stack to big circles with the drawn sides out, and attach by punching a hole and tying string through.
-String togehter or display separately.
-You can create conical forms by using fewer wedges in each piece

Student work is assessed based on craftsmanship, unity and variety, and visual appeal.

-I had my high school and middle school students do this to start off the school year which gave me a lot of information on their style, work habits, attitude, and comfort level with art.
-This could easily be adapted to any grade leve.
-This would be a great way to make "dots" for International Dot Day
