Collage Crocodiles

Working on cutting, gluing, shapes, and taking inspiration from literature. A fun lesson for early art learners.

THE PLAN
1. SWBAT create artwork inspired by literature.
2. SWBAT learn about crocodiles.
3. SWBAT use shapes to create their artwork.

12x18 Green/Pink Construction Paper
The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli
Black, red, green tempera
Pencils/Erasers
Brushes – small and large
Water cups Newspaper/butcher paper
Glue
Art Shirts
White construction paper scraps
12x18 heavweight white paper

Day 1
Rd The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli You can out from High Plains Library or use

Painting prep: Cover tables, art shirts, handout papers review painting rules
Paint a giant watermelon on white paper – Talk about color, rind, seeds, don’t forget name
and grade on back
Day 2-3
 Review the lesson…create a crocodile!

Handout construction paper, you could let students choose whether they want to make a
pink one or green one like the book.
4 - 9x12 paper: rectangle body, head, tail, four legs
Demo & Have students repeat:
Fold one sheet in half for the head and cut an arch line to make it more
rounded
Take 2 nd paper and cut out a tapered triangle for the tail
3 rd paper, fold so you have 4 sections and cut out.
4 th paper, stays as rectangle for body
Glue all parts together to makes a crocodile shape
Take white paper and cut circles for eyes, lots of triangles for teeth and triangles for claws.
Glue into proper place
Take black tempera paint and add iris to eye ball, and zig zag lines for crocodile skin
Glue watermelon inside mouth

Students may be assessed based on your district's rubric.
