High [9th-12th] Lesson Plan

Claymation

Created on November 11, 2018 by dirkusa2001

This is a lesson for 9th-12th grade, but can be done with lower grades with modification. Claymation is a stop motion animation technique that was used in old movies like King Kong to special effects. Students can work by themselves or with teams to create a claymation animation. Students need the stop motion studio that is FREE for both android or IOS.

4. SWBAT to understand timing/spacing.

1. Stop motion studio app FREE in Google Play or App Store
2. modeling clay

1. Students will view many examples of claymation. Wallace and Gromit, Gumby. (5 min)
2. Students will storyboard their animation. (40 min)
Next class.
3.Students will cut out a cup to make a stand for their phone. (10 min)
4. Students will then utilize the stop motion studio app. Learn how to use the app. Set frames per second to 12. Adjust lighting. (40 min)
5. Shoot frames. (45 min)
6. Shoot frames (45 min)
7. Upload movie file to their OneDrive or Google Drive. Then they download to their desktop.

Did the student create an animation that shows their ability to understand timing and spacing. Did they create an animation with movement. Did they understand how to use the app.

Here are links to some claymation videos.

Gumby:

I find that students may need to try and practice before they start on their actual animation. When they are learning the app try and have them just make 32 frames with the clay.

If students want a smoother animation they need to adjust to 24 FPS.

I also gave students the theme of transformation.

I also gave students a minimum amount of frames they had to shoot. 320 frames.
