Kawaii

Kawaii means cute in Japanese and is one of the latest art trends kids are going crazy about. I use this as an end of the year lesson along with doodling if there is time those last few week of school. Students learn about kawaii and make some cute characters of their own! I show them typical Japanese kawaii characters as well as doodles by Vexx.

THE PLAN
Students will learn about the kawaii style of art and create cute characters with markers.

1. Introduce the style of kawaii with teacher powerpoint.

2. Show the Vexx video for some good motivation

3. Demonstrate how to fill fill a page with kawaii doodle, kids can use pencil first or go straight to drawing with a marker depending on the time you have.

4. I like to bring my copic and professional marker sets and paper, fineliners etc... kids dont get to use them but I show them the differences os using top quality materials and offer low price suggestions to students who want something a bit better at home. (Of course one of the suggestions I make is prismacolor for students.)

I usually have a youtube playlist set up of all the videos on mute and then play some music like Imagine Dragons while the videos play. They love this at the end of they year, there is no pressure, they are learning and creating!

    artspaz, you are so welcome! This was the most favorite lesson of my student last year, I even had my kindergartners doing it by tracing their fingers for the heads and adding funny faces. Enjoy!
