Grid Animals

Students learn the 'grid' drawing method and then apply it to drawing an animal of their choice

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 90 minutes per session

Students will learn how to englarge a picture through the 'Durer Grid' method.

Students will practice value and shading skills

Paper, rulers, pencils, erasers, photocopier, internet access

Teacher introduces the concept of the 'Durer Grid' and provides histor related to grid drawing as well as practice on using a grid to transfer drawings.

Students pick an animal picture of their choice and then print it out at 8x10.

Teacher demonstrates how to draw a 2" grid on a 18x24 paper.

Students draw their grid then teacher demonstrates how to go 'square by square' to draw their animal references on the larger paper.

Teacher helps and reteaches where needed

Students are assessed based on a rubric. Did students use the grid to transfer the image into a larger drawing?

Did students use shading and pencil techniques to create a sense of realism in their drawings?
