Spider Hats

Students will learn about spiders & create a spider hat!

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. Students will be able to know the physical traits of Spiders.
2. SWBAT follow instruction & assemble their spider paper parts to create a unique Spider hat.

1.Black Construction Paper
2.Oil Pastels/Construction Paper Crayons
3.Glue
4.Scissors
5.Books: The Spider and the Fly and/or A Very Busy
Spider
6.Wiggly Eyes

1. Briefly discuss prior knowledge of Spiders
2. View PowerPoint on Spiders
3. Assemble headband and legs
- Staple together to ensure fit on students head
- Review spider legs – how many legs on each side?
- Pass out thin strips of paper and have students count out number of legs they need.
4. Accordion Fold (Zig Zag Fold)
- Demonstrate on how to make an accordion fold
- Students will glue legs onto their headband
5. Cleanup and Read “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle (if time permits)

Day 2/3
7. Read “The Spider and the Fly” by Tony DiTerlizzi
8. Hand out Spider (oval/circle) heads - black paper
9. Students draw their unique spider faces
- Encourage use of a variety of colors – Can they make spiders hairy? Can they look scary? Is it a girl or boy?
10. Glue on four large googly eyes
11. Glue head to spider body. Allow to dry. Take home and enjoy!

Does it have 8 legs?
Are all parts glued together well?

Teacher prep up front is important for a smooth lesson.
