Embrace the Grid

This lesson gives students a chance to practice different drawing techniques and media in a grid drawing.

THE PLAN
6 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT utilize a variety of drawing supplies and techniques.
2. SWBAT use a grid to create a drawing with accurate proportions.

1. 1inch square graph paper
2. Graphite pencils
3. Colored pencils
4. Sharpie or other felt tip pen
5. Any other available drawing supplies

Day 1: Introduction, practice, prep
-Practice drawing techniques of rendering, stippling, cross hatching, and scumbling using graphite, colored pencil, and ink
-choose own photo or Creative Commons photo to use for drawing. Crop to 4:5 and print at 8x10 with grid added in photoshop
Day 2: Demonstrate and start drawing
-draw the contours of the photo first
-begin to complete one square at a time with a variety of techniques and media attempting to match the value and textures of the reference photo
-try not to have two squares side by side with the same technique and medium
-aim goes creating balance with choices
Days 3-6 students work on their drawings
