Mosaic Collage

Slides presentation to teach students about the history of mosaic then create a mosaic style collage out of paint chips.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT understand the history of mosaic.
2. SWBAT define tint, shade, and tone.
3. SWBAT use geometric shapes to create a mosaic style collage.

1. Tagboard or cardboard for a base
2. Paint chips or construction paper
3. Scissors
4. Glue
5. Pencils

1. Introduction
-slides presentation to show history of mosaic & contemporary mosaic artist
-explain challenge to create a mosaic style collage
2. Students work
-brainstorm and check idea with teacher
-sketch out big shapes on base
-collect paint chip colors and begin to cut and glue


This took most students about 5 classes but some needed more time because they were more detailed. If you give them a theme you can judge based on the complexity.

[5-8] Students know and compare the characteristics of artworks in various eras and cultures
