3 sessions; 30 minutes per session

1. SWBAT Draw a turtle or fish realistically
2. SWBAT draw a variety of sea terrain and plants
3. SWBAT use techniques with oil pastels
4. SWBAT distinguish warm colors from cool
5. SWBAT create emphasis with pop up shape

1. Heavy card stock, white, 3” x 5” rectangles (or scraps)
2. 11”x14” white 80# paper, or heavier, or larger
3. Pencil for guidelines
4. Sharpie or black crayon for outlines
5. Cool color markers for lines of water
6. Oil pastels and toothpicks or scratching tool
7. Spray bottle of water (have a station for spraying work)
8. Scissors, glue, 1” square of thin styrofoam for pop up

1. Discuss seascape versus landscape. Demonstrate a simple seascape with underwater hills, coral, variety of sea weeds. Explain the value of NOT drawing on the edges, but towards the central area of the paper.
2. Outline with black sharpie or black crayon.
3. In water based marker, Draw with a variety of cool color lines over entire drawing.
4. Using oil pastels color the seaweeds, random drawn sea creatures, the sand
5. With oil pastels- layer color, blend color, scratch into thick layer of oil pastels
6. Holding a spray bottle several inches away, spray the artwork
LET DRY AND WORK ON THE POP UP PIECES
1. Follow along with teacher and draw a realistic sea turtle or fish. (Directions on Internet or drawing books)
2. Outline with sharpie and add color
3. Cut out animal/s with scissors
4. Glue pop up squares on the back of the animal/s and glue onto the seascape.

Show stills or videos of fish and underwater life. I sometimes show a film with gentle music to help with inspiration.
