First Day of School Art Activity

an open ended, process oriented, engaging project using a variety of art supplies. Materials can be at different "stations" (post Covid) or a set at each table (Hybrid Covid) with hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes at the ready.

THE PLAN
1 session; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT draw a small bouquet from observation
2. SWBAT work with a variety of art supplies on one piece
3. SWBAT experience Art making as experimental, open ended, intuitive
4. SWBAT complete a project in one or two sessions
5. SWBAT experiment with contrasting color
6. SWBAT see the effectiveness of the element of Space as they work with both the positive and negative space.

1. Small bouquet of flowers visible to each student
2. Markers - water based or permanent
3. Oil pastels or crayons
4. Watercolor paper, 6” x 9”, more or less
5. Watercolor paint set and paintbrush
6. Tempera Poster paint - gold color is fun

7. Collage papers (like origami, or photo dense magazines)
8. Scissors and glue

1. Demonstrate drawing from observation and model the steps, including caring for supplies while working.
2. Begin with Marker drawing. Include double outlines and overlapping of objects..
3. Use layers of oil pastel, or crayon, Pressing heavily on the paper. Blend and vary colors.
4. Brush wet watercolor over artwork. Use contrasting color on top of oil pastels. Let or blot dry with scrunched up facial tissue.
5. Add tempera paint.
6. When piece is dry, optionally add small collage pieces, overlapping each other or as random shapes.

1 . Students can do a silent “gallery walk” to just look at each other’s work.
2. Students should write a reflection or exit slip on the project answering two questions (at least)- What did they like? And What did they learn?
