Students learn to construct origami boats and then experiment to test the boats' buoyancy.
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT construct an origami boat.
2. SWBAT sculpt a figure out of modeling clay.
3. SWBAT test the buoyancy of their origami boats by altering the form of their modeling clay figures, adding multiple figures, dispersing the weight differently, etc.
4. SWBAT reflect on their observations and summarize conclusions about the experiment.
1. Origami paper (can substitute copy paper cut into squares)
2. Modeling Clay
3. Tub of water
4. Optional: supplies to create designs on the boats
1. The teacher will demonstrate how to fold an origami boat step by step and the students will follow along.
2. Sculpt figures out of modeling clay
3. Test the boats
-Let each student float their origami boats on the water one at a time and then add their modeling clay figure.
-Students observe their classmates' tests and then make changes.
-After each student has tested their boat once, discuss what was learned.
-Come up with ideas for what to test next. Examples: how many figures can fit in the boat, how does changing the arrangement of the figures affect the buoyancy, can you make modeling clay float, etc.
-Debrief and list conclusions
