Ted Harrison Orcas: Glow in the Dark

4th grade students learned about the artist Ted Harrison and his orca landscape series. Instead of using regular paint however students used fluorescent tempera cakes that will glow under the black lights for our under water themed glow in the dark art show.

THE PLAN
Students learn about the orca.
Students learn about the artist Ted Harrison and create paintings in his style.
Students demonstrate their understanding of value while using various watercolor techniques.
Students understand the concept of fluorescence.

Pencils, watercolor paper, neon tempera cakes, neon oil pastels, black sharpies, photo glossy paper, popsicle sticks, glue

Students create an ocean landscape in the style of Ted Harrison. Students use neon tempera cakes to add color, to create value extra coats of paint are added as these paints are very transparent. Once their background is finished students use photographs of orcas to draw and color their own on photo glossy paper which is then colored in with black sharpie and cut out. To create a pop out 3D effect students use broken popsicle sticks glued together to raise their orca off the paper.
