Middle [6th-8th] Lesson Plan

Art Music Video!!

Created on August 26, 2012 by AmyHall

My Middle School students (5th - 8th) recreated some of their favorite pieces of art... by making themselves a part of the art! We lip synced and filmed the results! Can you identify the pieces of artwork? Some are tricky! Answers at the end of the video. https://vimeo.com/33827081 This took about 6 classes to complete. 1 to plan, 4 to actually gather materials and recreate the pieces and 2 to film. I burned all of the kids a copy of the dvd and they have been talking about it since!

THE PLAN
-deeply study one piece of artwork.
-recreate their chosen piece using found and recycled materials.
-perform in a video recording.

We used all recycled materials... we raided the teacher's lounge for paper and cardboard.

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Form groups of 3-4
2. Chose a piece of artwork
3. complete worksheet about the artist/piece of artwork. (we used computers, books, any found resources).
4. Make a plan! - sketch out how you will recreate the piece of artwork.
5. Gather materials to recreate piece.
6. Recreate artwork (this was done in many different ways, depending on what each group chose).
7. Participate in filming... while lip syncing to song!! (We chose to do Eye of the Tiger!).
8. Edit into one video - this was done with teacher assistance.
9. Laugh your head off while watching students dressed up as Starry Night lip syncing!

This was one of our favorite all time project last year... I will for sure be doing it again this year! Many happy teaching moments came from it that I did not originally plan for - love when that happens!!

This project can be adapted in many ways. I left it open to students to chose any piece of artwork, but you could focus it on a time period or style.

**There is one artist identification mistake at the end of the video .. it has been fixed by a student, but the first version was already loaded to vimeo, so that's what I have now to post.
