1. Day 1: Put students into groups and ask them to brainstorm slogans. (For my projects, we brainstormed anti-bullying slogans in 5th grade.) Have students decide on a slogan to use and then figure out how many letters and which letters they need to photograph. Also decide on what they are going to use to make their letters. (I have one group decide to go outside to photograph and another group chose to use art supplies.)

2. On the second and third day, have students work in their groups to find/create their letters and photograph them. Talk to students about how to fill up the entire frame of the photograph with their letter. Also talk about using lines and forms to create letters based on how you look at them and from what angle.

3. On the last two days, have the letters printed out for the students. They should cut them out and glue them onto paper to create their slogan. (You can get as creative as you'd like here...your students can literally cut the letters out, or they can simply trim them into neat squares.)

Students can be assessed on creativity of their letters, how well they worked in a group, or both.

I did this project with 5th graders. I printed some in color and some in black and white, depending on how easy it was to see their letters in color. Some groups went all out when they designed their slogan presentation, and some did not, but I didn't really get into much detail about the presentation aspect because this was a beginning of the year project to kick off our school's anti-bullying campaign. These slogans are hanging in the elementary hallways for the rest of the year!
