Elementary [1st-5th] Rubric

Primary Unit rubric

Created on November 08, 2012 by RuthByrne

This is the rubric I use at the end of the first marking period for grade 3 and 4. I don't give grades on individual projects, but rather accumulate information about the student's craftsmanship, creativity and understanding over the course of a unit. I developed this after reviewing all the excellent grading resources on thesmARTteacher! I appreciate any feedback as assessment is a weak point for me.

This is a really interesting way to grade! I like it! How do you give grades with this...do they get a point for each item if they are doing it...or can they get a range of points?

I give them our school's version of letter grades (s,d,e +/-)for each block and then eyeball average the grades for a total in that category. I considered doing each block 1,2,3 or +,=,- but I'm not sure it would significantly improve the process. I also love giving s- or d+ ("d" What a terrible substitution letter, don't you think??) for a more nuanced grade.

This grading rubric is wonderful! I can't imagine the time you spend developing all of them. Do you create one for every grade level and unit? What a great way for the students to self-reflect and for parents to understand how you're grading in the art room.

I try to have one for every grade level and unit. Most of the blocks are consistent Marking period over Marking period. Grading is my weakest point though, and you're right it is time consuming, so I have to admit I just used a checklist for two of the marking periods this year. =/

I appreciate how your forms focus the students on the objectives and their success within the framework you provide. When I used a form less detailed for my grade 6 students, I found some paid closer attention to the objectives at the beginning of the next unit - reflected in their questions. A lot of work, thank you for sharing.

Thanks for these Ruth! I am going to make this a goal for the next few years- to develop solid rubrics per unit. Funny how we run into each other on social media!- Izzy
