Elementary [1st-5th] Lesson Plan

Elmer the Elephant

Created on November 28, 2012 by Karimarie

Students will read the book Elmer as a class and be able to understand that everyone is different and that is okay. Students will be able to share with the class what they have read. Students will then make a work of art that is as unique as they are by layering tissue paper to create new and interesting color combinations. Students will use fine motor skills to cut and paste, and layer paper.

Day 1-2:
•Students will read the book Elmer, with each student having their own copy so they may better understand the words and see the words as we read.
•Students will then share one thing that makes each of them unique.
•Students will layer a 9 x 12 piece of white paper with small squares of colorful tissue paper. Students may layer so that new and unique color combinations are made.
•Students will have two classes to finish layering tissue paper.

Day 3:
•Students will trace an Elmer the elephant pattern on the back of their layered tissue paper and cut it out. Students will choose a piece of construction paper for their background. Students will then choose a larger sheet of paper to glue the background piece onto.
Students may use oil pastels and crayons to add trees, flowers or any other small details they would like to complete their drawing.

• Students have created a unique work of art that reflects them using an elephant

•Students have layered tissue paper to create new color combinations

•Students can verbalized how everyone is unique and different and explain one unique thing about them.
