Elementary [1st-5th] Lesson Plan

Pastel Pumpkin Patch

Created on December 04, 2012 by MrsImpey

This was a project I used as a final project in my pumpkin unit in 1st grade. Students spent one day drawing a pumpkin patch on their own. On the next day, I taught them how to draw pumpkins realistically, and they drew another pumpkin patch. Then, we spent two days drawing and blending our pastels to create these realistic pumpkin patch drawings.

1. Have students stand up at one end of the room. Place one student in the middle of the room and another at the other end. Discuss how the closer student looks bigger than the farther away student, even though they are the same size.
2. Back at the tables, use pencil to draw three horizon lines for hills. Discuss how the pumpkins drawn on the bottom horizon line should be bigger than the pumpkins on the top horizon line.
3. When students have drawn their patch, have them trace over their pencil lines with white pastels.
4. On the second day, demonstrate how to blend colors to create a realistic pumpkin.

I used this as a final project in the pumpkin unit, so it served as an assessment for pumpkin drawing, as well as an introduction to depth.
