Day One
1. Students randomly "doodle" on white contruction paper creating large and small areas not creting anything specific. They use both curved and straight lines.
2. Students trace over the random pattern they create with the permanent marker.
3. Present examples of Wassily Kandisky's (or Picasso)art. Relate the random pattern they created to the artist's examples.
4. The students then create their version of this style art using crayons.
Day Two
1. Students put finishing touches on drawing and create a title for their work of art.
2. Students write a short narrative that develops what is going on in their work of art.

Students will be assessed based on the relating their art work to the narrative.

This resource is an excellent way to integrate art into academics. It is a wonderful activity to display for parent's to see and enjoy.

I have a third grade teacher pal who does this every week! She lets each student have a chance to design the first line/squiggle. Maybe I can introduce her to Kandinsky as a part of her introductory lesson.
