Warm & Cool Symmetrical Designs

Using a cool trick with black oil pastels, students will create a symmetrical design and then use tempera paint to fill their design with warm and cool colors.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT define symmetry.
2. SWBAT create a symmetrical design.
3. SWBAT identify warm and cool colors.
4. SWBAT demonstrate the ability to paint with tempera cakes using warm and cool colors.

1. 12x18 white drawing paper
2. pencil
3. black oil pastel
4. popsicle stick
5. tempera cakes
6. paintbrush
7. water

1. discussion about symmetry
2. fold paper in half
3. demonstrate and discuss creating design - how to get a whole shape if desired, etc
4. students draw design on 1/2 of their paper with pencil
5. trace over pencil lines with black oil pastel
6. fold paper so design is on the inside
7. using popsicle stick, rub design onto other side.
8. discussion regarding warm and cool colors
9. students paint 1/2 of design with warm colors, other half with cool colors

Students will take the attached quiz.
