Early in the year kindergarteners are becoming familiar with the art room, procedures/expectations and new media use. I discuss germs and the importance of developing habits to keep ourselves well, and then we IMAGINE what tiny germs look like, because we don't have a microscope.:( We tear paper and glue to backgrounds to make germ shapes and then use oil pastels to draw yucky details on these little monsters.

THE PLAN
1 session; 50 minutes per session

1.Introduce germs by discussing colds and ailments caused by them. Question students to asses their prior knowledge of germs. Allow some stories of personal experience.
2.Explain that germs are tiny things that get into our bodies all the time and that our healthy bodies have "soldiers" (white blood cells) that fight off germs most of the time, but that some germs take hold and make us feel bad. We have symptoms like sore throat, ear ache, etc.
3. Explain that germs find their way into our bodies through our mouths, eyes, nostrils and sometimes open cuts. It would be easy to keep them out if we could see them but we can't. That's why it's good practice to keep our hands out of those places, cough into our arms and wash hands often.
4. Ask the students for ideas of what germs look like. Do they look beautiful or ugly? Do they have tickly hairs on them? Horns or barbs? Are they slimy? Do they have faces/heads? How many?
5. Explain that we can't see them without a microscope but today they are going to use their imaginations to create a picture of what they think a germ would look like. They should make their art UGLY if they think germs are ugly. (#1-5, 15 min.)
6. Show materials that will be used.
7. Demonstrate tearing the 9x6" paper to make a shape. Show how to control tearing. Demonstrate gluing.(review?) Demonstrate using oil pastels.(introduction, review?)
8. Tell the students that if they are told that their art is UGLY today that's a good thing.(#6-8
1.Student tears paper without help.
2.Student uses art materials appropriately.
3.Student explained about his/her germ when asked.
The school nurse likes these especially when it is germ season, which is always when in school. :) Kindergarteners are learning about germs from two sources. They are very proud that their UGLY art is considered good too!

This was helpful. I just did a lesson similar to this! We also talked about the lines you use to make your germs (we drew them - but I love the torn paper shape idea!) and how the wiggly lines made you feel more "germy" when you looked at the art. We also compared real germs like I scientist would look at to our cartoon-style imagination germs we were drawing and being able to add faces and other details to our germs.
