High [9th-12th] Lesson Plan

1-Point Perspective City

A new twist on 1-Point Perspective. Students will draw a circle, create a point in the middle of the circle, and create a city that aligns to the vanishing point. Students will select buildings that they have a personal connection to.

THE PLAN
10 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT Use 1 Point Perspective Effectively.

2. SWBAT Include Personal Structures In Design.

3. SWBAT Use Line Effectively - showing texture and variety in buildings.

4. SWBAT Have A Balance Of Contrast In Their Art Piece.
1. 8 x 10 white paper
2. Compass
3. Scissors
4. Pencils
5. Sharpie
6. Black paper for matting work
7. Glue

1. students will practice 1 point perspective in sketchbooks.

2. students will design/imagine or use buildings that they have a personal connection to (use buildings they have toured or visited, use their home, places they have wanted to visit.)

3. students will create a 7 inch circle on white paper using pencil and a create a vanishing point.

4. students will start drawing structures that follow the curve of the circle

5. all structures will be aligned to the vanishing point

6. students will finish by using sharpie to add a darker value to create contrast. Some students didn't need to use sharpie because they created value in their pencil marks.

7. Cut out circle and mat.
Students were assessed using a general rubric of art work.

I also use their sketchbooks as a form of formative assessment to gauge how well they are grasping the lesson before starting their art piece.

    Thank you! Students really connected to this lesson personally because they were able to select buildings that were important to them in some way.

    I also used a value scale practice sheet for students before we began. I think this made a huge difference because they compared the value scale to the drawing while they were working. I expected them to have between 6-8 different values.
