My Middle School students (5th - 8th) recreated some of their favorite pieces of art... by making themselves a part of the art! We lip synced and filmed the results! Can you identify the pieces of artwork? Some are tricky! Answers at the end of the video. https://vimeo.com/33827081 This took about 6 classes to complete. 1 to plan, 4 to actually gather materials and recreate the pieces and 2 to film. I burned all of the kids a copy of the dvd and they have been talking about it since!

Mimic the real world job application process by finding out from your students why they think they would be good at whatever classroom job they want most. You could also tie in classroom jobs with investment by providing an incentive/reward for those that have classroom jobs and do them well. (See my link to my "Art Bucks" Resource for an idea on this)

This is what my 8th grade students will receive at the beginning of the year to tape to the inside of their sketchbooks. I have a drawer with hanging folders for each student to put their work in. "Portfolio workdays" are great for early finishers, those awkward days before holiday breaks, and days when you can't really start a new project. (*This yearlong portfolio assignment is only a measure of art skills with no art history goals, although that can be included!)

Musical Chair Portraits! First Day ActivityMANAGEMENT ELEMENTARY [1ST-5TH] |

KEEPS: 38 LIKES: 5 |
||
The first day of school can be long for young students. Try this for seat assignments. You will need 8x10 paper and drawing tools. Give each student a sheet of paper as they enter and take their seat. Then, instruct them to draw a large face shape on their paper. Next, when the music starts, they must find one person, say hello and ask them to draw a facial feature on their paper (swapping papers). When the music stops, they find an available seat. This should continue around the room with students searching out different partners each time to draw a feature. After about 6-7 turns, they should have a face with all the right parts on their paper. Whereever they end up in the room is their seat to begin the year. As they add details to their portraits, you can talk about classroom expectations, etc.

Students will think creatively by solving problems in multiple ways.
Annual Unit Template and Weekly BreakdownTEMPLATE ELEMENTARY [1ST-5TH] |

After teaching Art at the elementary level for five years, I realized that it would be extremely beneficial to have an easy Annual Unit Template as well as a weekly breakdown to adjust as needed. I certainly adjust them, but have finally created templates that work for me. Feel free to use and adjust as you see fit. Hopefully it saves others time and energy with planning for the various grade levels and units we teach. I have 24 sections of 1st-5th grade Art. I teach each section on a five day rotation. I have them for 1 hour every five days. Happy planning!

Students lead the class in Art Critiques. The students may also wear French berets, mustache, wire-rimmed glasses and art apron to help them portray their role. All students have previously filled out a graphic organizer with their thoughts on the artwork being critiqued.

Kindergarten students learned about Wassily Kandinsky and his Farbstudie Quadrate painting. The students identify the geometric shapes, draw their own concentric circles with crayon, then paint with watercolors to create a resist. I taught this to Kindergarten but it would be appropriate for any primary grade.
