As many others in our state are focused on UNC and Duke, my students are gearing up for our annual Art Madness competition. Whispers of artist comparisons begin to take over students’ free time; ‘Who do you think will make it this year?… Calder or Da Vinci?”… Will MC Escher make it to the Final Four?”.

I use the same rubric with every project. I change the criteria to fit the project and pass one out to each student after I have explained the lesson. It helps students understand EVERYTHING they must do to achieve the grade they want. Plus, if they forget what they need to do they always have it to double check. I have the signs posted in my room too to show them how they are doing.

In art I, we begin our year with basic drawing skills. We focus on elements such as value, texture, positive/negative space and drawing what you see. I use a still life to challenge students to use what they have learned.Lines in the fabric will scare the students at first but will help them draw the fabric without looking flat.

Students learned about the architecture of Mykonos and Santorini. These Greek Islands are recognized by the stark white buildings with splashes of red and blue color on the roofs, windows, and doorways. Houses were built very close together as protection from pirates and the strong wind. Buildings were painted white to keep cool from the high temperatures of summer. Students used watercolor pencils to create their Cycladic Island paintings.
