Animal Collage

Stiudents create an animal portrait in it's environment using construction paper and colored pencils.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 75 minutes per session

1. SWBAT understand form and Space
2. SWBAT cut out complex shapes to match a pattern
3. SWBAT draw sketches of an animal in it's natural habitat

1. Construction paper in various colors
2. Glue
3. Scissors
4. X-acto knives
5. images of animals
6. drawing paper
7. colored pencils

1. Teacher shows examples of animal collages
2. Teacher discusses the elements of form and space
3. Teacher demonstrates how to create a pattern for the animal
4. Teacher demonstrates how to cut out complex shapes
5. Students do research of the animal they want to create and do several rough sketches
6. Students create a pattern for their final collage
7. Students cut out shapes from construction paper to match their pattern
8. Students glue shapes to pattern.
9. Students add details to their collages with colored pencils

Did students emphasize form and space?
(animal does not look flat)
(overlap and size were used to create the illusion of space)

Did students take care in cutting and gluing of construction paper pieces (no loose edges, no glue smudges)

Did students show animal in natural habitat?
