Introductory lesson for upper elementary students to learn about digital photography and composition.

THE PLAN
1 session; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT to define shape.
SWBAT define space.
SWBAT create several examples using a digital camera to create photographs that utilize the elements of Shape & Space to form letters.

3. Examples of Photography Letters

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Show the book Alphabet City by Stephen Johnson. Show an examples of Photo Letters that spell words. (10 min)
- Discuss with students what they see.
- Explain Space and Shape.
2. Demo how to use the digital camera. Students will share 1 per group. (35 min)
- Explain the parts of the digital camera & features.
- Explain how space & shape can be used to create a composition that shows a letter.
3. Go over what is expected from group working together
- Time management
- Review photos & reshoot
- Compromise

Exit out the door and have students do a thumbs up or down after showing different examples of shape & space.


Make sure students take turns. Also have them preview and retake any blurry photos. Managing their time. I print out their best photo. If I want to extend the lesson I can have them color their bw print outs.
