Object Stop-Motion Animation

Using inanimate objects as manipulatives, students create 5 second, 50 frame (10 frames-per-second) stop-motion animations!

THE PLAN
SWBAT use a series of photographic images to create an animation.

1. Camera
2. Computer (to create final animations)

DAYS 1-3
—Explain and show examples of stop-motion animation.
—Assign or have students choose a object to animate.
—Students explore movements and progressions with their objects

DAYS 4-6
—Students create a 10fps breakdown sketch of their animation idea. (From frame 1 to frame 50.)
—Students practice simulation/mock frame-by-frame animations (without camera) to practice final.

DAYS 7-9
—Students shoot final animations in rotations.
—Teacher uses Photoshop or other editor to sting together photos to create final animation.

    Windows Movie Maker is really easy for kids to use and can make a stop motion by altering the frame rate to .3 seconds per picture. It's a great way to get the kids on the computer creating the final project.

    There are better programs you can pay for, but as far as free goes, Movie makers probably already on the computer and it is functional.
