THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify and create AB patterns.
2. SWBAT plan a simple design using shapes.
3. SWBAT use good craftsmanship to cut shapes and glue in place to create a stamp.
4. SWBAT use their created stamp to print a composition featuring a variation of an AB pattern (AB, AABB, etc.)
1. Cardboard, pre-cut into small squares or rectangles. (Approximately 1x1- 2x2 inches)
2. Craft foam
3. Paper and pencils (if you want them to practice)
4. Liquid glue
5. Sharpies
6. Construction paper, multiple colors
7. Liquid tempera paint, black
8. Paintbrushes
1. Introduction
-Review patterns, AB patterns like in math class
-You can use shapes to create patterns
-Explain that printmaking is making an image on a plate so that it can be printed more than once
2. Planning
-Students plan designs using shapes
-Can trace their cardboard a few times on scratch paper to practice
-Make sure that students draw shapes and not just lines
3. Making the stamps
-Use sharpie to write name on back of cardboard
-Cut shapes out of foam
-Arrange shapes on cardboard
-Glue shapes in place and let dry
4. Printmaking (in second class period)
-Students choose construction paper color and label name on back
-Pass out stamps
-Demonstrate using brush to apply thin layer of tempera and print on construction paper, starting in a corner
-Demonstrate how to print stamp in different patterns by rotating. *If the designs have radial symmetry the stamp will look the same even when rotated.
-Students choose an AB pattern and fill their paper with prints, placing them close together.
Did the student use good craftsmanship?
Did the student create an AB pattern?
Is the composition pleasing?
This project was equally successful with my Kinders and with 2nd grade students. I see it working at any primary grade level.
