Patterned Chinese Lanterns

Students learned about Chinese New Year and demonstrated knowledge of pattern to create their own lanterns.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 25 minutes per session

SWL: about the significance of the Chinese Lantern in Chinese New Year
SWL: about the customs, symbols, and traditions of Chinese New Year
SWBAT: create their Chinese lantern
SWBAT: create an AB pattern or another pattern of their choice

1. White paper (tagboard or watercolor)
2. Lantern templates for tracing
3. Oil pastels
4. Watercolors
5. Brushes
6. Scissors
7. 1-hole punch
8. Ribbon
9. Pencils

1. Trace lantern template onto paper
2. Draw straight horizontal lines with a ruler (the length between lines is up to the student but they should leave enough room for the design)
3. Draw designs with line and shape within the lines with pencil.
4. Trace everything drawn in pencil with oil pastel
5. Paint with watercolors
6. Cut out lantern
7. Punch 1 hole on top with 1-hole punch
8. Tie ribbon around hole.

Students will be graded on a 4 point scale rubric on completeness, craftsmanship, creativity, and ability to follow directions/behavior.
