High [9th-12th] Lesson Plan

Disappearing Word Design

Created on August 27, 2014 by artmeiro

This is a unit plan that focuses on the concepts of pattern and symmetry. Students create a symmetrical design by reflecting a word across a line of symmetry. Using oil pastels, students create patterns designed to "hide" their chosen word. . The unit includes daily lessons.

THE PLAN
During the lesson the student will learn that:
1. A line of symmetry is a mirror or fold line that joins both sides of a symmetrical shape
2. Symmetrical designs can be man made or found in nature.
By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Apply properties of symmetry to create symmetrical designs using a word that is reflected over a line of symmetry.
2. Complete a symmetrical design using line and pattern to obscure the word they have chosen.

Materials: 8.5 x 11 inch cardstock or heavy weight paper, pencils, oil pastels. (this can be switched to markers, watercolor, colored pencils...anything really)

PROCEDURE FOR WORD DESIGN

1. Fold paper in half the long way (a hot dog fold)
2. In pencil, using all capital letters, write the word from the top of the page to the middle, making sure that each letter hits both the top and middle line. (line of symmetry)
3. Go over letters again with the pencil, making sure that you are pressing down firmly.
4. Fold your paper in half and rub the back of the paper until you can see the faint outline of you name reflected on the other side of the line of symmetry.
5. Using the pencil, go over the reflected image, again remembering to press down firmly.
6. Using the markers provided, trace the original letters and reflection of your word using ONLY ONE COLOR.
7. Create patterns using the different colored markers in the spaces around and between your name. Make sure whatever you do to one side; you must reflect over the line of symmetry.

Evaluation:

Formative Assessment:
As students are creating their pattern examples and as they are completing their reflections, the teacher will move around the room and help students who are struggling. Teacher will also encourage students who are exceeding expectations to share their work with the class and the method in which they produced their artwork. Students will also have to complete a checklist (included in their Student Activity Guides) before they can hand in their projects.

Summative Assessment:
Students will be handed a rubric on which they will be graded based upon at the beginning of the lesson, included with their Student Activity Guides. They will have a clear sense of exactly how they will be graded. Students must also complete a writing component to be handed in with their finished product.
