Students create a series of observational drawings of pumpkins and gourds.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session

Objectives
The student will be able to:
1. Develop skills in observational drawing - draw from life
2. Use contour lines to create a drawing of pumpkins and gourds
3. Develop skills in use of value in shading - use a variety of tools. Show a full range of values from black to very light
4. Develop skills in oil pastel and chalk pastel application. Students will use blending techniques to complete their drawings.

Materials: Pencils, rulers, erasers, chalk pastels, oil pastel crayons, pumpkins and gourds.

EQ: How can we use contour lines to begin our observational drawings?
FQ: What is the advantage of using contour lines to create an artwork? Why do artists use contour lines? How does the feeling of an artwork change by the kinds of lines used?

Review: Different kinds of lines, expressive, organic, straight contour, shading, value.

Demonstration: Drawing the pumpkins and gourds using various drawing materials. (pencil, sharpie marker, oil pastel and chalk pastel) Drawing on paper that is not white.

Art Making: Students will be required to complete at least two drawings using each material for a total of eight drawings. They can do practice drawings and make multiple attempts at each kind of drawing so that they will have many choices for selecting images for their final drawing portfolio.
Closure/Clean up: Students will return their drawings and folders to the appropriate class drawer. All drawing materials will be returned to the supply table.
Assessment: Students will be graded based on the attached rubric.
