THE PLAN
10+ sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use acrylic paint, tools, techniques, and processes in a sophisticated manner
2. SWBAT successfully replicate color using only the primary colors, black, and white
3. SWBAT use a grid to enlarge or replicate a famous painting with accurate proportions
4. SWBAT research and explain the influence of art and artists on their time and culture

1. Blickrylic Paint (Magenta, Chrome Yellow, Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue, Flourescent Blue, Titanium White, Mars Black)
2. Paintbrushes (I use the Blick Economy Gold Taklon)
3. 80lb paper or canvas board
4. Largeish art reproductions (I use images from old calendars that have been laminated)
5. Rulers
6. Pencils
7. Markers (to draw the grid on the art reproductions)

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Have students research an artist (sometimes they all research the same artist, sometimes they have to research an artist from a particular movement)
2. Students are to complete a notes page with biographical information about the artist and a minimum of three images with title, size, year, and media information (This goes in their binder)
3. Students will find a color reproduction of the artwork that they wish to reproduce either online or in the art resource flat file
4. A grid will be drawn on the artwork that is at least 1x1"
5. The artwork must be copied either at the same size as the reproduction or no more than 2x that size (they can go up to 18x24")
6. Using only primary colors, black, and white, students are to complete a small scale reproduction of the artwork in their sketchbook and make notes in terms of color mixing
7. Students will be working on these paintings for the remainder of their studio time

A common rubric/reflection - see attached

- I let them use various blue hues and sometimes different red hues because it's important for them to see that when mixed the results can vary dramatically

- In past years I also have chopped up a large print of Starry Night and given each section to a different student. The result was really quite good and is still on display four years later.
