Indian Miniatures

Perfectly in time for Diwali, these Indian Miniature paintings are gouache on bark paper. They emphasize pattern, borders, Indian imagery and craftsmanship.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT create a sketch or plan
2. SWBAT compare and contrast Indian Miniatures using a Venn Diagram
3. SWBAT use patterns and borders in their art
4. SWBAT establish Indian Miniature style to emulate in their own paintins
5. SWBAT study the color wheel and gouache paint
6. SWBAT to use bark paper and compare it other paper they previously used for painting

1. Sketchbook and pencil
2. Bark paper (cut to 4 by 6 inches)
3. Gouache paint sets (12 colors plus white)
4. Small paint brushes
5. Erasers
6. Cups of water

1. Student look at Indian Miniature paintings in small groups and come up with a class list of identifying characteristics (borders, landscapes, etc)
2. This becomes their list of requirements
3. Student look at a variety of Indian imagery from a variety of resources (internet, books, etc)
4. Students sketch out their idea for their Indian miniature in pencil in their sketchbook with a focus on the requirements, using the visual resources.
5. The students create a color wheel using the gouache to familiarize themselves with the medium.
6. Student draw their miniature design onto small bark paper with pencil.
7. Students paint their Indian Miniature with gouache.
8. Students self assess using the rubric provided.
9. Teacher assesses student work using the same rubric.
