Australian Landscape Collage

Students create landscape collages of torn paper with patterned Eucalyptus leaves with a focus on warm or cool colors.

THE PLAN
SWBAT create space by overlapping collage.
SWBAT use temperature color theory.
SWBAT recognize the artwork of Australian artists.
SWBAT learn tearing techniques for paper.
SWBAT self assess their artwork.
SWBAT focus on pattern and symmetry in painting a eucalyptus leaf.

1.Eucalyptus leaves
2.Opalescent white acrylic or tempera
3.Sharpies in a variety of colors
4.Variety of scrap paper organized by warm or cool colors
5. Glue sticks
6. Rulers and pencils
7. White cardstock 9 by 12
8. Liquid glue (for gluing leaves on)
9. Small brushes and cups of water for painting.
10. Drying rack

1. Show students images of Australian artwork using computer (both aboriginal and contempory with a focus on pattern).
1.b. Teacher gives students the requirements of the project and show other student examples.
2. Students discuss warm and cool colors and choose one family as their theme.
3. Students choose two eucalytpus leaves to color with sharpies coordinated with their color family choice.
4. Student sketch symmetrical patterns in their sketchbook.
5. Students paint their symmetrical patterns on top of the colored eucalyptus leaves with pearl white acrylic paint.
6. Students select scrap papers coordinating with their color family.
7. Students measure one inch border on their white cardstock.
8. Teacher demonstrates paper tearing techniques and layering collage to create a sense of space.
9. Students tear, collage and create their landscapes using chosen scrap paper by gluing within the border they created.
10. Students self assess using rubric.

I saw this a long time ago from another art teacher, but I cannot find that resource anymore. So credit to them if you can find them.
