Having Fun With Negative Space Collage

Students will combine negative space and collages to create one of a kind artwork.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT create art using negative space.

2. SWBAT create art using collages.

1. Glue

2. Scissors

3. Scrap paper for collage (Any type of paper you want to use.)

4. Paint, markers, color pencils (optional)

5. Poster board (White, black, or both. Regular paper is fine if you can't find any.)

6. Something sharp to cut fine lines and get into tight corners. (Box cutter or X-acto knife)

7. Everything else (Anything you can think of that will help you complete this project.)

1. Think up a concept for your collage or just go with the flow.

2. Collect scraps from magazines, newspapers, construction paper or whatever type of paper you can find around the house to use for your project. If nothing you have available suits your needs use paint and other art mediums to give it some flair. (Can't find anything with polka-dots, then create your own.)

3. Glue your scraps of paper onto the poster board. Make sure to cover the whole thing. (Once the glue has had time to dry, cut off any overhang.)

4. Now it's time for the negative space portion of this project. Think up some ideas. They can be symbols, random shapes or even "happy accidents".

5. On a separate piece of poster board, that is the same size as your collage, sketch or trace your design. You can use stencils, compasses or other items to help make it easier for you. Once done begin cutting your design out using an X-acto knife or box cutter. (If this project is for little kids have an adult perform this step.)

6. On the back of your design glue around the edges then attach to your collage.

You can also do the opposite and have your collage on top.
