Holiday Linocuts

Students are given instruction in drawing simple winter and holiday themed subjects. Students carve these into easy to carve Soft Kut with traditional linocut tools, printing with waterbased ink.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 60 minutes per session

SWBAT draw simple holiday motifs.
SWBAT carve an image into linoleum.
SWBAT properly ink a printing plate.
SWBAT successfully transfer an image to paper.

1. drawing paper
2. pencil
3. Soft Kut linoleum
4. linocutting tools such as Speedball
5. Blick or Speedball water soluble ink
6. Block printing paper such as Subi
7. Brayer
8. wooden spoon or baren or small printing press such as Blick 906
9. Sharpie markers

1. Model drawing 6-8 winter or holiday themed designs. (see Pinterest link below) 60 minutes
2. Show Youtube video (link below) If the classroom teacher is not familiar with carving linoleum, search for and watch other videos on Youtube. Demonstrate carving the Soft Kut. (30 minutes)
3. Distribute one piece of 4x6 Soft Kut per student.
4. Rinse and dry the Soft Kut to remove the powder coating.
5. Draw the chosen design on the Soft Kut with a Sharpie.
6. Use the cutting tools to cut the design. (60 minutes)
7. Do a demonstration of printing using the chosen method.
8. Have students print their designs. (5 minutes per student)

Formative assesmsents:
Students create a flow map of the steps in creating a linocut.
Students create a flow map of the printing process.
