Monster Collage

This is a collage lesson that goes along with the book If You're a Monster and you Know It. Key concepts are geometric and organic shapes, cutting, overlapping, and gluing. This lesson can be done in collaboration with the music teacher too.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 50 minutes per session

I can identify free-form and geometric shapes.
I can use glue properly.
I can overlap shapes.

Glue
Construction paper
Scissors

Optional: large punches for shapes

-Teach students about free-form and geometric shapes.
-Read book If You're a Monster and You Know It. While reading identify the different shapes you see in the monsters.
-Have student choose a 9x12 colored paper and cut a shape for the head of their monster. Glue on 12x18 black paper.
-Demonstrate how to cut facial features and how to overlap them. Discuss patterns.
-Continue decorating monster with cut paper.
