THE PLAN
1 session; 50 minutes per session
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
Use line to create a skyline.
Use the chalk and stencil technique to transfer their skyline to a piece of black paper.
Share stencils with other students to create a skyline that has at least three-layers/levels
25.A.1d: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color, and texture; the principles or repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion, and pictorial representation.
26.A.1e: Indentify media and tools and how to use them in a safe and responsible manner when painting, drawing, and constructing.
Images of skylines, black construction paper, white construction paper, scissors, pencils, erasers, chalk pastels, baby wipes
Anticipatory Set: (10-15 minutes)
Look at images of skylines:
What lines and shapes make a skyline?
Outline the top of the skyline with a highlighter so students can see the line a skyline makes.
Sequence of Activities: (15-20 minutes)
Pass out a piece of white paper/tag board to each student. Have them draw a skyline line horizontally across their paper.
Students can then cut out their line (this is their stencil that they will use to transfer the chalk to the black piece of construction paper).
Students will then pick on color of chalk and color a 1/2inch thick line across the top of their stencil.
Students will then place the stencil horizontally on their black paper (top 1/3rd of the page) and use their finger to transfer the chalk from the stencil to the black paper.
After students have made one line using their own stencil they need to trade stencils with a partner and repeat the steps until they have three skylines at different levels on their black paper.
Finally, students can use the pastels to add windows and a sky.
Clean up.
Students will be assessed in alignment with the objectives of the lesson:
Did the student create a stencil that looks like the tops of buildings/a skyline?
Did the student properly use the chalk stencil technique to transfer the chalk from the stencil to the black paper?
Did the student share their stencil with others to have three different skyline layers?
