Impressionism with Monet

Students create an impressionism style painting and choose a three dimensional paper flower or boat to add.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 50 minutes per session

SWBAT identify the impressionistic techniques of the masters.
SWBAT create impressionistic brush strokes.
SWBAT create kirigami flower and origami boats.

1. 9 by 12 mixed media paper
2. tempera paint in blue, turquoise, green, white and yellow
3. A variety of brushes
4. Small white paper plates
5. Origami paper (square) in a variety of colors
6. glue
7. Scissors
8. Patience ;)

1. Introduce the impressionists and Monet to students using reproductions.
2. Pass out white paper and have each student write their name on the back.
3. Students paint short choppy brush strokes in an impressionistic style using tempera paint in the provided colors.
4. Dry on the drying rack
5. Demonstrate how to create kirigami flowers using paper plates.
6. Demonstrate folding origami sampan boats.
7. Students choose one of the three dimensional objects to glue on their paper.
8. Photograph and rejoice in their masterpieces!

Did the student use impressionistic brush strokes?
Was the student successful in following the directions to make three dimensional flowers and boats?
Did the student use their time and materials safely, properly and wisely?


I had the students make both and then choose which one to include on their impressionistic water.
