1. Demonstrate multiple ways to draw snowmen on drawing paper. Look on Pinterest for drawing ideas, if necessary. Students draw their own snowmen on their own paper.(20 minutes)
2. Demonstrate drawing with pastels. Demonstrate blending. Demonstrate how the placement of the moon affects the lighting, colors, and shadows. (15 minutes)
2. Distribute pastels and construction paper. Students begin their drawings. Circulate around the room to offer assistance. (remainder of session 1 and session 2 to complete)

Assess the quality of the student's final product. Did the student show the values of light and shadows on the correct side of the snowmen?
Are the pastels well blended?

The picture book Snowmen at Night

My at risk middle schoolers absolutely loved this project. The affects of the chalk pastels and the blending were almost magical to them. Everyone was engaged, allowing me to move around and offer individual instruction in blending and shading. I have 30 7th and 8th graders per class.
