En Plein Air

Students will create a series of En Plein Air drawings. French for "in the open air", students will leave the comfort of the classroom and create drawings of their subjects on location.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT define En Plein Air.
2. SWBAT participate in a class discussion about En Plein Air.
3. SWBAT study examples of Plein Air artwork.
4. SWBAT create a series of Plein Air artwork.

1. Drawing paper
2. Hard surface or a clipboard to draw on
3. Pencil
4. Watercolor, markers, acrylic, crayons, or colored pencils
5. Paint brush

Day 1 & 2: INTRODUCTION TO EN PLEIN AIR (45 minutes)
1. Students will learn what plein air is all about.
Questions students should try and find an answer to, if possible:
---What is En Plein Air?
---How did it get started, and who started it?
---Who are some of the artists that created plein air artwork?

2. Independently or in groups students will print out and study plein air artworks from well-known artist. These will also be used for inspiration, for when they start their own.
Questions students should try and find an answer to, if possible:
---What type of medium was used?
---Where/when did the painting take place?
---How long did the artist work on the piece?

Day 3 & 4 ATTEMPTING PLEIN AIR (45 minutes)
1. The class will find a location outdoors on the school grounds to start their plein air. Students will be given 20 minutes to work, before moving on to another location to do another 20 minute drawing. The last 5 minutes will be used to check out the rest of their classmates work.
Examples of Plein air subjects are:
---Buildings
---Outdoor still life
---Sunrises or sunsets
---Outdoor locations with people or animals
---Water related (rivers, lakes, etc.)
---Floral

Day 5 WINDING DOWN / TOUCH UPS (45 minutes)
1. Students will spend 20 minutes putting the finishing touches on their artwork.
2. The last 25 minutes will be used to discuss about their experiences doing plein air.


This is a great project to base a field trip around. Or to have students attempt plein air at home.
