Using the teaching guide from Art21, show the El Anatsui video and engage the students in a conversation about his artwork, meaning and materials. Then explain the steps of the project, and show student examples.
Students use the xacto knife to cut just below the edge of the top and use scissors to cut the rest of the top off. They might need to wash their aluminum can at this time.
They should use scissors or funky scissors to create petals attached to the bottom base. When all the petals are cut, the students paint the flower with acrylic paint, with a focus on color theory and radial symmetry. If they need to attach more than one can, they use hot glue.

See attached rubric.
