Students learn about the life and art of Emily Carr and create an oil pastel landscape in her style. Students recognize the influence of Canadian art and the native people of the Pacific Northwest of er works.

Optional: The book, Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World by Jo Ellen Bogart
1. Introduce the life and art of Emily Carr through a teacher made PowerPoint and the book, Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World by Jo Ellen Bogart. Focus on Canadian art and the native people of the Pacific Northwest.
2. Teach students about background, foreground,and middle ground. Demonstrate how to create movement (like Emily) in their art piece.
3. Have students draw their pictures making sure to draw foreground trees first, then middle, and then background trees. Trees in the background will be skinnier than trees in the foreground.
4. Teach students how to use oil pastels and blending techniques. Students then color their drawings with oil pastels using dark and light and blending different colors.
