Students learned about the life and art of Emily Carr and created an oil pastel landscape in her style. We read the book, Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World by Jo Ellen Bogart and focused on Canadian art and the native people of the Pacific Northwest.

1. Introduce the life and art of Emily Carr through a teacher made PowerPoint and the book, Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World by Jo Ellen Bogart. Focus on Canadian art and the native people of the Pacific Northwest.
2. Teach students about background, foreground,and middle ground. Demonstrate how to create movement (like Emily) in their art piece.
3. Have students draw their pictures making sure to draw foreground trees first, then middle, and then background trees. Trees in the background will be skinnier than trees in the foreground.
4. Teach students how to use oil pastels and blending techniques. Students then color their drawings with oil pastels using dark and light and blending different colors.
