Day 1: Show students power point about artist Reggie Laurant. Discuss organic and geometric shapes and how he uses them in his art. Have students paint their canvas board black.

Day 2: Review organic and geometric shapes (use flash cards, around the world, etc.). Look at Reggie Laurant's artwork and discuss how he used up his space, keeping his artwork balanced. Have students paint a variety of organic and geometric shapes on their black canvas. Focus on having crisp edges.

Day 3 and 4: Add color the project by cutting up tissue paper and placing it over the white shapes using the acrylic gloss. Students can lay the tissue paper over their shapes and trace/draw the shape they want to cut out to get the exact sizes.

I did this with a 12:1:1 class with a wide variety of abilities. My power point shows an extension of the project where students create a silhouette of themselves doing an action, and then filling in the area around the silhouette with the shapes as outlined above.
