THE PLAN
1 session; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT create curved lines with construction paper.
SWBAT create texture with everyday materials.
SWBAT create a rainbow.

Construction paper
-Soft blue 8 1/2"x 11"
-1" strips for all colors of the rainbow
-cotton balls (preferably ripped apart)
-glue sticks
-"What Make a Rainbow" by Betty Schwartz

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Read "What Makes a Rainbow"
2.Discuss what makes a rainbow and the curved line a rainbow makes in the sky.
3. Work together as a guided practice to apply the first three colors of the rainbow. Demonstrate making tabs, placing glue carefully on the tabs, and holding the paper down to get it to stick up in a curved line.
4. Students apply the remaining three colors independently.
5. Demonstrate how to put glue at the end of the rainbow for "clouds" and how to pull apart cotton balls.

Assessment will be informal. Watch students during the last three colors to assess their gluing skills, color recognition, and overall attention to project directions.

When I read the book I pretend it is magic! It is a great first book to read the kinders to get them to practice good listening skills during carpet time.
