1. Show students a PowerPoint about Anne Worsham Richardson and her artwork. Compare/contrast to John James Audubon.
2. Discuss the difference between realistic art and abstract art.
3. Have students choose a picture of a bird from a book or photograph and practice drawing their bird using observational skills to draw the markings, shapes and patterns of the birds they see. To ease the pressure of trying to draw realistically I emphasize their effort in trying to depict the main features of the bird, ie., patterns, color, shape, etc...
5. When students are ready give them a piece of watercolor paper to begin their drawings.
6. Demonstrate watercolor techniques and allow students to color their work with a variety of watercolor media. Watercolor pencil, liquid watercolor, watercolor cakes, etc... Encourage shading and blending.
7. Optional: students may outline their birds with a sharpie or oil pastels.
