Aperture Study

Students arrange Hershey Kisses as they explore depth of field and as they create a Black & White image that could be used in an advertisement.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT explain how the f-stop numbers correlate with depth-of-field.
2. SWBAT create a balanced composition that contains an areas of emphasis.
3. SWBAT manipulate a basic lighting source to capture texture and form.
4. SWBAT utilize basic editing techniques to adjust contrast.

1. Hershey Kisses (or other wrapped candy)
2. Black construction paper
3. Cameras with manual settings (aperture priority)
4. Windows or Small Lamps
5. Computers & Editing Software

1. Review Aperture and how adjusting the f-stops on the camera influence the overall photograph
2. Explain the lab
- Create a single line of candy
- Focus on the central one, and set the camera to the smallest f-stop number (largest aperture opening).
- Take a photo.
- Adjust f-stop gradually, and take a picture at each stop.
- Journal (report findings).
3. Advertisement Shot
- Arrange candy in a way that emphasizes the product.
- Determine which f-stop will create the effect desired.
- Consider composition, texture, form, etc.
4. Upload work
5. Edit
- Turn black and white (desaturate)
- Adjust brightness and contrast
6. Peer Conferences
- What works? What doesn't work?
- Which image(s) are strongest?
7. Submit & Journal
- Submit the best shot
- Students should journal about their creative process. What types of decisions did they have to make? What types of adjustments did they make as they worked?
