Day 1: Introduce van Gogh to students. Discuss his life. Pass out the Scholastic Art and have student read the article about Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. Ask random students for some facts about Van Gogh as a ticket out the door.

Day 2: Pass out Scholastic Art and elementary worksheet. Read and answer questions 1-3 together (dealing with elements of art). Pass out canvas and have students draw a still life. Have Van Gogh's Sunflowers on the board for reference.

Day 3: Continue with the Scholastic magazine and answer question 4 with regards to color in Picassos "Old Guinatist" artwork. Discuss monochromatic. Have students draw 10 ice cream scoops (or any other shape) on tagboard. Pass out a palette of tempera to each table that has one hue, black and white. Explain tints and shades. Students should mix 5 tints and 5 shades to paint their scoops.

Day 4: Cut out and glue the ice cream scoops to another sheet of tagboard/construction paper. Order them from dark to light. Have students fill out the rubric and answer review questions.

Day 5: Watch Don McLeans Vincent on YouTube. Pass out lyric worksheet and have students try to decipher the lyrics based on what they know about Van Gogh's life.

Day 6: Continue/finish the lyrics worksheet. Go over it together. Demonstrate how to paint the background wall in the still life paintings to create texture. Have students paint their background.

Day 7-10: Continue and finish painting the still life. When finished, have students fill out rubric as a self-assessment and write a short essay based on the essay questions on the back of the rubric. Mat and frame essay and hang next to student artwork.

See attached rubrics.

The paintings show above are from a few years ago. I have revamped my unit to include Common Core ELA standards. I have just started this unit so I don't actually know how many days it will take, I am only guessing.

I also think that I will be giving my students the option to do the still life or a monochormatic landscape in the style of Van Gogh this year.

I like this! I do a monochromatic landscape with the kids. That way we can focus on Atmospheric perspective. Staying in one color really helps them focus on their textures and brushstrokes. Great lesson!

One trick I learned in painting classes, was to look at your subject through red acetate. That changes the light so everything is seen as values. I think that technique will really appeal to visual learners!
