Day 1: Draw a snowman using white oil pastels. Review how to create depth in an artwork (overlapping, larger in the front, smaller in the back, multiple horizon lines, etc.). Have students add a background, including mountains and other snowmen. Show students pictures of the Northern Lights and discuss the science behind them and the colors that can be seen in the sky. Have students color and blend their sky only today with oil pastels.
Day 2-3: Demonstrate to students how to make their white snowman stand out from the snowy background. Blend different tints and shades of blue into the white. Students work on finishing their snowmen.
This particular lesson built upon what I had previously done with 1st grade students. In the fall, we did oil pastel pumpkin patch drawings, so this was a review of how to blend oil pastels, and also a review of depth. Before drawing our oil pastel snowmen, we actually took a day to play my "Roll-a-Snowman" game.
