THE PLAN
5 sessions; 35 minutes per session

1. SWBAT recreate priceless art
2. SWBAT create an original art piece from an existing art piece.

1. brown construction paper
2. oil pastels (I use Cray pas)
3. blending sticks
4. pencils
5. examples of LD's ML
6. examples of MD's LHOOQ

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Draw Mona as Leonardo DaVinci did (hands as large as head, triangle shape, no eyebrows, part, veil, barron background) -1 to 2 class periods
2. Change either her or the background to modernize her/ mock her. -1 class period
3. Layer pastels to recreate oil painting finish in both paintings. -2 to 3 class periods

Students self-assess based on the following questions:
1- how closely did Mona Lisa resemble LD's drawing of her?
2- how successful were you in modernizing the picture? what did you change and why?
3- Is your pastel creation complete so that there is no paper showing? Did you use the tools to do the best finish you could? Is your work neatly done?

I always achieve my student goal objective of 85% or more receiving an A or above on this lesson and the display is always a huge hit each year.
